The curtain appears to be lowering on Trent Alexander-Arnold's Liverpool career, with a summer move to Real Madrid seemingly imminent.

Speculation over his future has been rampant for months, with Los Blancos spending much of the season pursuing a deal for the 26-year-old, whose Anfield contract expires at the end of the campaign.

While no official agreement has been signed, sources indicate that a deal between Real Madrid and Alexander-Arnold is nearing completion, with the player having verbally accepted their offer.

In January last year - after over eight years at the helm - the German announced he'd be stepping down as Liverpool boss at the end of the 2023/24 season, in a decision that left his squad absolutely gobsmacked.

"We all thought, 'Is this a joke?' None of us were expecting it," Alexander-Arnold told The Athletic.

It just shows how much he means to me and the club."

Life under Klopp was all Alexander-Arnold had ever known, and the prospect of change left him feeling - for the first time in his Liverpool career - a little unsettled.

Then, in January, Real Madrid tested Liverpool's resolve by submitting an offer for Alexander-Arnold, though it was hastily rejected.

Interest from abroad doesn't seem to have affected his form, but Alexander-Arnold has done little to quieten speculation about where his future lies.

In contrast, Mo Salah and Virgil van Dijk - who are also out of contract at the end of the season - have both openly expressed their desire to stay at Liverpool.

News of an imminent agreement with Real Madrid won't have sat well with the Liverpool faithful, but if Alexander-Arnold can help deliver just the second Premier League title in the club's history, much of the frustration surrounding the manner of his departure may fade.

A triumphant end to the season would ensure a fitting end to his 21-year association with the club.
