Pep Guardiola has always been an animated figure in football.
Whether celebrating wildly or making dramatic statements, he knows how to stay in the spotlight.
But when things aren’t going his way, his words can take a different turn.
This season, Manchester City have struggled to maintain the dominance they once had.
They recently suffered a Champions League defeat, and in the Premier League, they are facing a much tougher challenge than before.
Unlike past seasons where they ran away with the title, they now have serious competition from teams like Liverpool and Arsenal.
Liverpool, under new leadership, have found a way to stay at the top.
Despite injuries and setbacks, they remain in the fight for the title.
While many admire their resilience, Guardiola seems more focused on proving a point about his own team’s past success.
“It will not happen” – Pep Guardiola takes swipe at Liverpool
Ahead of City’s clash with Liverpool next weekend, the Spaniard took an unprovoked swipe at the Reds.
Speaking to the press on Friday, he referenced a conversation with Ilkay Gundogan, saying, “I [spoke with] Gundo [Ilkay Gundogan] yesterday [I said], ‘Answer me a question.
Two years ago you were here, you were one year in Barcelona, you come back one year.
Did you [notice a] change [in] something in the Premier League?'”
“I said, ‘Massively.’ Gundo, one year he travelled, was with Barcelona one year and come back.
These are the standards [that] we [have] dictated.”
“So Liverpool, have you seen Liverpool this season?
And look at the season they have done.”
“That made me the benchmark and [makes me] say, look at what we have done…”
“It will not happen [again, 100 points], we will be irreplaceable.
It will be so difficult for them to compare with what we have done.”
It’s a bizarre way to praise his own achievements.
The Spaniard’s comments make it seem like he has waiting for the moment Liverpool couldn’t reach 100 points just so he could make this statement.
With City and Liverpool set to face off soon, this could be an attempt to stir things up before the match.
But one thing is clear, Guardiola is keeping a close eye on Liverpool, whether he admits it or not.
