It's already clear who Liverpool's takers should be if there's another penalty shootout v Newcastle - opinion

With all four of the French side’s takers scoring, Liverpool were out.

Of course, there is the prospect of a second shootout for Liverpool in the space of matter of days.

Should Sunday’s Carabao Cup final against Newcastle end goalless after 120 minutes, they’ll do it all again.

With Nunez never looking like scoring when he stepped up, it’s clear that the Uruguayan should not be trusted again if this is the case.

And with Jones unlikely to get the nod either, here are the five members of the Liverpool squad we’d pick to get the job done at Wembley.

No surprises here.

Mohamed Salah is Liverpool’s regular penalty taker and was the only one of the three who scored past Donnarumma on Tuesday.

Overall, his record from the spot is good, with 11 from 12 penalties scored this season – not including from the Champions League shootout.

MORE LIVERPOOL STORIES

Dating back to his first season with Liverpool, Salah has scored 44 out of 52 penalties, making him a shoo-in for any occasion like this.

The 26-year-old scored two out of two from the spot for Liverpool last season and has bagged 12 out of 13 in his professional career.

Part of the problem is getting Macca to last the 120 minutes.

But after being stung on Tuesday, Slot surely has to keep him on just in case against Newcastle.

Another who was substituted prematurely against PSG, Dominik Szoboszlai would have no doubt been on the list for Liverpool to face Donnarumma had he been on the pitch.

Although he has never taken a spot-kick for the Reds, Szoboszlai assumes that responsibility for the Hungary national team.

The 24-year-old has also taken them for RB Leipzig and Salzburg in the past and has buried an impressive 18 out of 19 professional penalties.

Like with Mac Allister, Slot surely cannot make the mistake of taking him off on Sunday.

Along with Salah, Mac Allister and Nunez, Cody Gakpo is the only other player in the current Liverpool squad to have taken a competitive, non-shootout penalty for the Reds.

Gakpo took – and scored – one against former club PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League in February.

The Dutchman also stepped up four times for PSV during his time in the first-team, scoring three and missing one.

With two also bagged for the Netherlands national team, Gakpo’s record of six out of seven is worth considering.

There’s a chance the 25-year-old would actually have been fourth on the list on Tuesday.

Ordinarily, our fifth pick would have been Trent Alexander-Arnold, who has come to the fore in shootouts for both Liverpool and England in the past.

But with Alexander-Arnold injured for the game, we’re going with captain Virgil van Dijk.

Van Dijk’s penalty against Kepa Arrizabalaga during the 2022 cup final will live long in the memory and the centre-back has a 100 per cent record from the spot after scoring for the Netherlands back in 2023.

Diogo Jota is another consideration with two out of two on his CV, while Federico Chiesa has scored two out of three.
