Liverpool are starting to run out of time on contract extensions for three of their biggest stars.
The Reds have had all season to find a breakthrough with each of Virgil van Dijk, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Mohamed Salah, but are yet to make any progress.
There has always been confidence that Van Dijk will stay especially, but with barely three months left of the campaign, things are still not sorted.
Van Dijk has been incredible under Arne Slot, underlining his importance to the Liverpool squad with a goal and a dominant performance to lead the Reds into the Carabao Cup final on Thursday.
After that game, Van Dijk shut down rumours that he’d signed a new deal, insisting that anybody who claims to know where his future lies is ‘wrong.’
Nevertheless, journalist Fabrizio Romano has shared a new update on the status of an extension for the Liverpool captain.

Following Thursday’s win over Tottenham, there were reports that Van Dijk’s agents were sitting alongside Richard Hughes during the game at Anfield.
And according to Romano, these claims are absolutely correct.

“Something to say on Virgil van Dijk,” the transfer expert told his YouTube channel on Friday evening.
“It’s true that the agents of Virgil van Dijk were sitting next to director of football at Liverpool Richard Hughes for the game against Tottenham.
So, there is still a very good conversation, a very good relationship between Liverpool and the agents of Van Dijk.”

“But Virgil himself once again said that whoever is mentioning things on my future has no idea on that,” Romano added.
“Because on that the decision have still not been made.
“So, what we can say today is that Liverpool are still talking to Virgil, they still want to extend the contract and they are still optimistic.
They want Virgil to stay and they hope to get the green light.”
Although it has always felt likely that Van Dijk would sign on to stay at Liverpool, there is clearly something stopping that from happening just now.
And while confidence should continue that the captain will put pen to paper, this is now becoming a close run thing.
Once the season ticks into March, it will start to feel very possible that Van Dijk is in fact leaving Liverpool.
