The Athletic’s James Pearce has provided an update on how the rest of the transfer window could look for Liverpool having opened on Friday, 14 June.

Arne Slot will no doubt have a busy summer ahead of him in terms of squad planning, where he will be collaborating with Michael Edwards, Richard Hughes, and the rest of the recruitment team.

Liverpool’s squad could use some improvements, despite a major midfield overhaul last summer.

Many of Liverpool’s detractors perceived the Reds’ squad as too thin to sustain a Premier League title challenge throughout the entire 2023/24 season.

Claims have been made that Liverpool reportedly considering a summer move for Athletic Bilbao winger Nico Williams, the promising young talent who has been turning heads with his performances in La Liga and Euro 2024.

Fabrizio Romano previously revealed that Liverpool had ‘discussed’ Williams a few months ago.

The Bilbao winger has emerged as a key player for Spain at Euro 2024, notably shining in their recent 1-0 triumph over Italy.

During this match, the 21-year-old made a significant impact, skillfully navigating past his marker, Giovanni Di Lorenzo, and drawing the attention of many who had not yet recognized his abilities.

Nico Williams enjoyed an impressive 2023/24 season, contributing significantly to Athletic Bilbao’s success.

He played a pivotal role in their Copa del Rey victory and their sixth-place finish in La Liga, recording eight goals and providing 19 assists in 37 appearances.

But it seems that Liverpool are not exploring a move for the winger as things stand.

James Pearce provides Liverpool transfer update

Writing in his transfer deal sheet, the Liverpool journalist claimed that although there is interest in bringing in a wide player – it does not extend to Nico Williams.

Pearce writes:

“[Liverpool] are also interested in adding a wide attacker to increase their options in that department, but Athletic Bilbao’s Nico Williams is not under consideration.”

“On the left side, they are already well served with Luis Diaz, Cody Gakpo and Diogo Jota.”

“Liverpool are planning for the new season with Diaz, despite interest from Barcelona.”

It would make sense from a squad planning point of view, as the forward area is amongst the most stacked positions in the Liverpool team.

Furthermore, Bilbao president Jon Uriate made it quite clear recently that he will not be looking to move Williams on, saying:

“Nico is happy in Bilbao and at Athletic and we’re very happy with Nico.”

“We don’t worry about or pay attention to rumours.”

“We’re focused on creating an attractive project for all our players, fighting for titles and competing in Europe.”
