Liverpool won the game 1-0 but perhaps the biggest post-match talking point was the decision to award Tarkowski just a yellow card for his robust challenge on Alexis Mac Allister in the early stages.
The Everton defender’s flying tackle caught the World Cup winne r high on the back of the calf and Arne Slot admitted after the game that his player was fortunate not to be seriously injured.
The PGMOL has since apologized and admitted a mistake was made, but the fallout from the decision has unfortunately led to Tarkowski and his family being sent threatening messages on social media.
James Tarkowski was lucky to escape a red card for his high challenge on Alexis Mac Allister
Tarkowski admitted after the game that he apologized to Mac Allister for the tackle and stated he did not mean to harm the Liverpool midfielder
“When the ball fell between us, I actually thought he was just going to come and I was expecting a big old school 50/50 tackle.
“He just pulled out of the tackle, and as I lunged in, I caught him pretty high, so I’ve apologized to him and he’s accepted it, so yeah, not a great one from me.”
