Jamie Carragher has reacted to the news of Thomas Tuchel being appointed as the new England manager.

While there were some indications that the FA could go with interim manager Lee Carsley, they changed tack after he publicly admitted that he did not want to be the Three Lions boss.

Tuchel, who has signed an 18-month contract, will officially begin his tenure in January 2025.

The German coach’s appointment marks a significant shift for the FA, as they seek to capitalize on Tuchel’s tactical prowess and club experience at Paris Saint-Germain, Chelsea, and Bayern Munich amongst others.

Tuchel’s primary goals with England will be to prepare the squad for the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup and to build on Southgate’s foundations by turning the team into a consistent title contender.

Although his salary will reportedly be lower than his previous roles, his hiring reflects the FA’s commitment to investing in a top-tier coach who can bring silverware to England after years of close call.

On the appointment, Tuchel said on the official Three Lions website:

“I am very proud to have been given the honour of leading the England team.

I have long felt a personal connection to the game in this country, and it has given me some incredible moments already, the German explained.

“To have the chance to represent England is a huge privilege, and the opportunity to work with this special and talented group of players is very exciting.”

“Working closely with Anthony as my assistant coach, we will do everything we can to make England successful and the supporters proud.

I want to thank the FA, in particular Mark and John, for their trust and I am looking forward to starting our journey together.”

But the fact that England have gone down the route of appointing a foreign manager does not sit right with some.

Jamie Carragher reacts to Thomas Tuchel appointment

Jamie Carragher has provided his reaction to the news.

“I am not bothered either way, I must be totally honest,” Carragher began, before explaining why feels the Three Lions should have an England manager.

“I’m not the most patriotic of people or the England manager has to be this – it’s not just about England.”

“My feeling is that it’s international football.

The whole point of international football – certainly with the major nations – is that it’s ‘your best vs their best'”.

“Club football is different and we love it?

Different nationalities, different coaches in the Premier League or Champions League and it’s a real mix.”

“But the thing that makes international football different from the club game is that it’s people from your country.”

The former Liverpool man also explained how the ‘big nations’ competing for the major tournaments should always have managers that come from the country:

“I know that has been skewed with players, maybe there weren’t born in the country [they represent] and it goes back to their grandparents,” the Sky Sports pundit continued.

“I also understand certain nations having a foreign coach who will have influence on them and drag the whole footballing structure up.”

“But when I think of how England were so close to winning a major tournament and there was so much good work that went into producing these players at St Georges Park – it just doesn’t feel right to me that we have a foreign coach.”

“And it’s not about England, I don’t think Italy or Germany should [have a foreign manager], I don’t think France should.”

“I’m not going to lose any sleep over it, but I think England should have an English manager,” he concluded.
