Jamie Carragher has demanded that Liverpool bosses sign “at least five or six” new players for Arne Slot in the summer transfer window.
The poor display was out of character for a Liverpool side that has been a juggernaut in the Premier League this term, though it mirrored the issues seen in their premature Champions League elimination by Paris Saint-Germain earlier in the week at Anfield.
While there were elements of fatigue visible and potentially bruised confidence from their European exit, club legend Carragher pointed out afterwards that Liverpool’s over-reliance on 15 or 16 players has been their undoing.
You can say that it’s come back to bite them on the backside, with the Champions League and this cup final.
Are the other squad players as good?
“I don’t think he has any time for four or five players in that squad, and the fact that he didn’t change players at home to Southampton between the PSG games – against one of the worst teams ever in the Premier League – I can accept that this season as this isn’t really his squad, but next season I’m sure he’ll bring players in.
"He’ll have to trust his squad more because he’ll need to get further in the Champions League, and he can’t accept a performance like that in a cup final.”
Carragher went on to list the exact positions where Slot needs to strengthen in the upcoming summer transfer window, insisting that three starters and three more back-up players are required.
The former central defender said: “I’m excited to see where Arne Slot will take Liverpool because it looks like they’re going to win the league, but there are still so many areas to improve.
There are at least five or six players he needs to get in – three to go straight in the team and three to be strong back-ups.”
Liverpool would need to bolster their ranks even further if key players Alexander-Arnold, Mohamed Salah, and Virgil van Dijk decide to leave Anfield.
At this moment in time, the legendary trio's future is up in the air with no contract extensions agreed as of yet, potentially setting them up for summer exits.
But despite Carragher's calls for a squad overhaul, Liverpool have been performing exceptionally well this season, currently leading the Premier League table by 12 points.
