Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher was a proud parent over the international break.

The football analyst flew to Malta to see his son James make his international debut for Malta during their World Cup qualifying games against Finland and Poland.The Champions league winner was calm and composed watching his son play.

Wigan centre back James Carragher started both games at the heart of his sides’ back three under Malta boss Emilio De Leo.While James and De Leo did suffer back-to-back defeats, it did not dampen the mood of the former Liverpool man who was full of praise for his son.

When talking about James and the international break on the Stick To Football podcast, Jamie said: “I went out to Malta during the international break to watch my son (James Carragher) play for the national team in their World Cup qualifiers.“He started both games, which I wasn’t sure that he would as it was his first call up.

I wasn’t nervous watching him, but I could see my dad (Philly Carragher) was nervous.“I wanted Robert Lewandowski to start, but he came on with 20 minutes to go and James was marking him and then managed to get his shirt after the game.”Malta currently compete in Group G of the World Cup qualifiers and currently sit in fifth place after their opening two games.The Maltese have a chance to bounce back in June as they face Lithuania and the Netherlands in the second round of World Cup qualifying fixtures.
