Jamie Carragher has cast doubt over the suggestion that Erling Haaland was too unfit to start in Manchester City's pivotal Champions League clash with Real Madrid.
The 24-year-old Norwegian striker was a question mark for Wednesday night's match at the Bernabeu, having been substituted during City's emphatic 4-0 victory over Newcastle.
With City needing to bounce back from their 3-2 defeat at The Etihad last week, Haaland remained on the bench throughout the game, which saw Kylian Mbappe's hat-trick knock the Premier League title holders out of the competition.
Earlier in the evening on CBS Sports, pundit Guillem Balague reported that Haaland had informed manager Pep Guardiola that morning of his inability to start due to a knee injury sustained in the previous game.
"Haaland has gone to the manager this morning and said he's not fit?
Is that because Rudiger is playing?"
Carragher continued to challenge the legitimacy of Haaland's injury given his place on the bench, expressing his own disbelief: "He's on the bench so he can't be injured.
I never went to see the manager on the morning of a game and said I'm not fit.
We didn't deserve it, it's the first year we didn't make a good Champions League season.
