Jamie Carragher has questioned whether four Liverpool players have what it takes to put the club at the very top of global football.
Liverpool’s forward line has been the subject of increased criticism in recent weeks as the Reds suffered consecutive disappointments in cup competitions.
With star man Mohamed Salah experiencing a rare dip in form, serious questions are being asked about the supporting cast in Arne Slot’s attack.
Liverpool’s reliance on Mohamed Salah has been painfully evident in recent fixtures.
The Egyptian forward, who has been in sensational form in the Premier League with 27 goals and 17 assists in 29 league games, delivered poor performances in crucial matches against Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League and Newcastle United in the Carabao Cup final.
In the 2-1 defeat to Newcastle, Salah failed to attempt a shot on goal or create a chance for the first time in a game where he played 90 or more minutes for Liverpool.
This shocking statistic highlighted a growing concern that when Salah isn’t at his brilliant best, Liverpool’s attack looks decidedly toothless.
Luis Diaz, who started the season brightly, has experienced a significant goal drought.
After a promising start to the campaign, the Colombian forward has managed just four goals since November 5, 2024, with only one goal in his last 18 matches.
Though he did break his drought with a goal against Wolves in February, his overall contribution of 13 goals this season falls short of the expectations for a Liverpool forward.
Diogo Jota’s struggles have been even more pronounced.
The Portuguese striker has failed to find the net in ten consecutive games and delivered a particularly disappointing performance in the Carabao Cup final, recording just 16 touches in 57 minutes before being substituted
Darwin Nunez, meanwhile, continues to frustrate despite occasional flashes of brilliance.
With just seven goals in 40 appearances this season, the Uruguayan’s finishing has been heavily criticized, with some fans suggesting his career at Liverpool is over at the end of the season.
Now Jamie Carragher, speaking on the latest episode of The Overlap, explained that he is getting frustrated seeing the lack of impetus other than the Egyptian:
“When I’m watching Liverpool with the eye test, Salah was poor [vs Newcastle] because we expect so much from him.”
“But I’m tearing my hair out looking at the others?
Come on lads… you can’t wait for him to do it every week'”, Carragher said.
“We are the top scorers and only lost once in the league and that’s why I don’t want to be too critical but I do feel there is a centre-forward problem, left-wing can be improved… and I think attacking midfield as well.”
He hit out at the aforementioned trio and also lumped Dominik Szoboszlai and Cody Gakpo in the conversation – with the latter excused for his showings recently as he is clearly still not fit after that ankle knock against Everton:
“I know Szoboszlai gives a lot of energy and that but I still want more after two years for £60million,” Jamie Carragher continued.
“I look at the other teams’ No10s, I look at Cole Palmer, [Bruno] Fernandes, [Martin] Odegaard at Arsenal… I still think there can be more there and you can’t just rely on Salah.”
“We’ve bought all these players after Salah arrived, Cody Gakpo, Luis Diaz, Darwin Nunez, and Diogo Jota – they’re all good players, but these are not great players.”
“Salah is not even a great player, he’s a once in a generation player lifting all of them up and carrying them with him.”
