Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has been outspoken about the club and its players during his punditry career, and has recently offered his opinion on Trent Alexander-Arnold’s current contract situation.

The Scouser, who spent his entire playing career at Anfield, has witnessed various transfers, where players either leave for minimal value after not signing extensions or stay and cement their legacy as all-time legends at the club.

The right back has cemented his place as one of Liverpool’s key players since breaking into Jurgen Klopp’s squad.

Trent Alexander-Arnold has given new life to the right back role since his debut, operating up and down the right hand side, and providing goals and assists for the team.

In a column shared by The Telegraph, Carragher expressed his instinct that Trent Alexander-Arnold might be seeking a change of scenery, but warned the Liverpool right-back that leaving his boyhood club would come with a hefty price.

The article was published after Trent mentioned his desire to build a legacy for himself, and Carragher, having witnessed both the creation and destruction of legacies at Merseyside, understands the weight of such decisions.

Carragher compared Trent’s situation to that of two Scousers who served with him during his time at Anfield: Steve McManaman and Steven Gerrard.

He questioned whether Trent would follow McManaman’s route or take the path of legendary captain Steven Gerrard.

McManaman left Liverpool for Real Madrid in 1999, being unveiled as a Real Madrid player while still in Liverpool colours.

According to the report, McManaman’s Anfield legacy was tarnished due to the fact that club earned nothing from his transfer to Real Madrid.

Although McManaman won numerous trophies, including two Champions Leagues with Madrid, he “does not receive the love from Liverpool fans that our teammate Robbie Fowler does,” as reported.

Local lads in Liverpool have a different relationship with the fans, where the working-class fans put their trust in one of their own.

When Steven Gerrard briefly contemplated leaving Merseyside for London, Liverpool fans took to the streets, burning the midfielders jersey outside Anfield.

However, Gerrard ultimately stayed, securing his place among Liverpool’s greatest-ever players.

So far, Liverpool and Trent Alexander-Arnold have failed to reach an agreement on a new contract.

The right-back previously stated that his contract negotiations would remain private.

However, as January approaches, speculation about whether Trent will renew his contract at the club is intensifying.

With Trent playing for a Liverpool team competing on all fronts, the fans would struggle to forgive him if he left as a free agent, and his relationship with the Anfield faithful could be permanently damaged.

While Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk also face expiring contracts at the end of the season, they are not local players, and fans generally accept that foreign players may come and go.

Key players Phillippe Coutinho, Luis Suarez and Fernando Torres all departed Anfield in search of greener pastures, but the fact that they were not local lad’s did not have the same impact as that of McManaman and Michael Owen.

However, the Anfield faithful expect loyalty from those born and raised in Liverpool.

A move to Real Madrid is undoubtedly an attractive proposition, but with Liverpool competing for major honours, there’s no reason why Trent Alexander-Arnold can’t cement his legacy as one of the greatest players in the world while remaining at Anfield.
