Jamie Carragher believes Liverpool's Carabao Cup final defeat to Newcastle United will be a learning curve for head coach Arne Slot.

The former Liverpool defender has claimed that the Dutchman's frequent use of unchanged squads 'bit him on the backside' in light of Sunday's Wembley disappointment.

The Reds will be forced to mull over their failed defence of the League Cup during the two-week international break before returning to Premier League action, when they take on Everton.

Sunday's bruising defeat saw Mohamed Salah continue to struggle while the Reds' midfielders were second-best in the battle with the Magpies.

Carragher believes the current options at Anfield looked tired under the arch and claims that Slot has to trust his squad after their defeat.

The 47-year-old said: "I think a big thing this season that has stood out and probably come back to bite him on the backside today, he doesn't change the team.

"We're getting used to the manager, we're not sure if it's his way and it's put Liverpool in a great position to win the league title.

"It shows that in this league, they're running out of steam, legs, the fact that he's very reticent to change the team or give the nod to players who don't normally play meant he almost played his best team against Southampton, one of the worst teams the Premier League, because he felt, 'I can't take the risk in bringing players off the bench in the game'.

"Gravenberch, who looked tired, Szoboszlai, Mac Allister he rarely changes that midfield and again that's something he's got to learn.

"He got to probably trust his squad if they want to go further in the Champions League."

Liverpool are back in action when they play Everton in the Merseyside Derby at Anfield on April 2.

The Reds are currently 12 points clear of Arsenal in second in the Premier League.
