Jamie Carragher has shared what Liverpool could do in the January transfer window that is rapidly approaching.
Liverpool’s 2024/25 season kicked off with high expectations, with many fans expecting Arne Slot to be heavily backed in his first transfer window.
The club made two signings in Federico Chiesa (£12 million) and Giorgi Mamardashvili (£25 million) – with the Georgian shot-stopper only joining in 2025.
Mamardashvili is expected to challenge Alisson when he does join up with the squad and he recently spoke about his intention to do so.
However, the general perception to the summer transfer window was one of a missed opportunity.
The ultimate failure to secure Martin Zubimendi – who has not spoken about any regret in light of the transfer – was a blow to Arne Slot who saw the Spaniard as the ideal midfield signing.
What did Jamie Carragher say about Liverpool and the January transfer window?
The Reds have enjoyed a very strong start to the season, with the Dutch manager racking up 10 wins in 11 games including seven wins in the Premier League.
However, a surprise home loss to Nottingham Forest served as a wake-up call.
Despite this hiccup, fans remain largely positive about the direction Arne Slot is taking the team, especially with big Champions League nights coming up.
“They’re very much pushing [to win the Premier League title], as they were last season.
We shouldn’t forget that,” Jamie Carragher said to Sky Sports.
“They haven’t reinforced.
It’ll be really interesting to see if Liverpool do bring anyone in in January.
They didn’t bring too much in in the summer.”
The former Reds man believes that the club will pay up if the right player comes along in winter:
“And if they think they’ve got a realistic chance at the title and there’s a player that they feel fits their criteria, their model, I think they’ll pay the money to bring that player in.”
The Sky Sports pundit also revealed that he feels it’s still Manchester City who are favourites to claim an unprecedent fifth straight Premier League title however:
“I still think Manchester City, without a doubt, have an edge on Liverpool?
And probably just Arsenal, maybe.”
“You change your mind every week, don’t you on the back of results, but I still think City are the team to beat – and Liverpool and Arsenal, you can flip a coin.”
The last time Liverpool did January business was bringing in Cody Gakpo in the 2022/23 campaign.
But Jamie Carragher is right, if Arne Slot’s men find themselves top of the tree by new year, the club should unequivocally back him to ensure the squad has that extra % they may have missed last season.
