Jamie Carragher has confessed that Liverpool may have been hasty in selling Danny Murphy, a player he believes was significantly underrated.
Murphy, who spent seven years at Anfield and played alongside Carragher during the Reds' triumphant FA Cup, League Cup and UEFA Cup season, was sold to Charlton Athletic for $3.1 million upon Rafa Benitez's arrival.
Following his stint at Charlton, Murphy had successful spells with Tottenham and Fulham in the Premier League before ending his career at Blackburn Rovers in the Championship.
Carragher praised Murphy's ability to step up in crucial matches, particularly against rivals Manchester United and Everton.
Speaking to The Telegraph, Carragher said: "Someone who was really underrated was Danny Murphy.
"He was a lot better than many we brought in afterwards, that's for sure."
Danny Murphy opens up about his departure from Liverpool, revealing that Benitez's warning about limited game time prompted his move to London.
In retrospect, Murphy wishes he had stayed to battle for his place, particularly in light of the team's Champions League triumph that season.
He confessed: "It was a difficult decision for me at the time because I was so used to playing and I loved playing.
