Jamie Carragher, a Liverpool legend, recently named his all-time Liverpool XI, sparking excitement and debate among fans.

Carragher, who spent his entire professional career at Liverpool from 1996 to 2013, is one of the club’s most loyal servants.

Known for his tenacity, versatility, and leadership, he made over 700 appearances for the Reds, securing his place in the hearts of Liverpool supporters.

Carragher’s selection comes as Liverpool continues to honor its glorious past, including an era of remarkable dominance in the late 1970s and 1980s.

Liverpool won six league titles in that decade, with players like Kenny Dalglish, Ian Rush, Graeme Souness, and Alan Hansen becoming household names.

Their success extended to Europe, with triumphs in the European Cup, including memorable wins in 1981 and 1984.

This sustained period of excellence firmly placed Liverpool among the footballing elite.

Carragher, having witnessed and been part of some of these key moments, brings a unique perspective to his all-time Liverpool XI.

Speaking on the Overlap, the Sky Sports pundit gave his view when asked by Gary Neville:

“I would go Ray Clemence just over Alisson only for the fact that he won so many trophies.”

For the defensive partnership, Carragher said:

“I would go Virgil van Dijk and Alan Hansen – I think that would be a great partnership.”

“I’m going to go for Steve Nicol [at left-back].

“Right-back, centre-back, left-back.”

“He was that good for Liverpool’s he’s got to be in the team.”

“Souey (Graeme Souness) has to be in that central midfield area alongside Steven Gerrard”

Moving onto the right-wing position in a classic 4-4-2, Carragher explained his reasoning:

“I think there is two options, before Mo Salah joined the club, I would always play a completely different player – Ian Callaghan.”

“He’s the only player whose played more games for Liverpool than me – 860 games.”

“But Mo Salah has got to go in on that right side.”

Moving to the strikers, Carragher explained:

“Kenny Dalglish has got to play… I think Ian Rush goes in.”

“You think of what he did in those cup finals against Everton (see our list of the most famous Merseyside derby here including the Ian Rush show).”

Understandably, Carragher selected a lot of players from Liverpool’s past eras where they were undoubtably the best team in the country.

Carragher’s final XI is:

Ray Clemence, Phil Neal, Alan Hansen, Virgil van Dijk, Steve Nicol, Graeme Souness, Steven Gerrard, Mohamed Salah, John Barnes, Ian Rush and Kenny Dalglish.
