Jamie Carragher has discussed the chances of Alexander Isak leaving Newcastle this summer amid serious interest from Liverpool.
By now, every Liverpool fan should be aware of the Reds’ interest in the Swedish striker, who has been in impressive form this season.
Isak has been the standout player for Eddie Howe’s team, scoring 19 Premier League goals in a campaign where only Mohamed Salah (24) and Erling Haaland (20) have registered more.
He has 23 goals in all competitions, including a goal against Liverpool in Sunday’s final at Wembley.
Several top journalists have confirmed Liverpool’s interest in the player, including David Ornstein, who recently confirmed that Isak is a Liverpool target.
Carragher, discussing the chances of Isak leaving Newcastle this summer amid interest from the Reds and Arsenal, admitted that the 25-year-old’s future is likely to be greatly affected by the Magpies league finish,
Eddie Howe’s side currently sit sixth, a point behind Manchester City in the table.
With fifth place likely to qualify for Champions League football next term, Newcastle have a game in hand to potentially leapfrog Pep Guardiola’s side.
Carragher feels Newcastle will be keep Isak in the summer if they can finish in the Champions League spot.
“The only one I think is Isak, who the real elite would be looking at,” Carragher told the It’s Called Soccer podcast.
“With Isak, he is so much better than a lot of strikers that Liverpool or Arsenal have got, you know, teams who are competing for the Premier League.
“So he is the one people would look at.
One hundred percent I think Isak stays if they qualify for the Champions League because I don’t think the club would sell him anyway.
And they’d just say they are in the Champions League, so they wouldn’t need to sell him, money-wise.
“The problem they could have is if they don’t make the Champions League then really it is not about what happened in the cup final.
I don’t think Newcastle will gain anything by selling him now unless they had to.
“And that is why, if Newcastle get into the Champions League, there’s no way Isak is leaving the club?
I think the club will say: ‘No, do another 12 months and in a year’s time we can make a few quid, and you can move on.'”
