Jamie Carragher is a Liverpool legend.
He played over 700 games for the club and was a key part of their 2005 Champions League-winning squad.
He also represented England 38 times.
But now, his son James Carragher is making his own way in football.
James has been a regular for Wigan Athletic this season, featuring in 29 matches across all competitions.
The 22-year-old defender has developed well and is now set to take a big step in his career – international football.
However, he won’t be following in his father’s footsteps by playing for England.
Instead, James Carragher will represent Malta.
Jamie Carragher’s son gets international call-up
He became eligible last month after being awarded Maltese citizenship, which he qualified for through his paternal grandfather.
Shortly after receiving his citizenship, Malta Football Association president Bjorn Vassallo confirmed the discussions, saying, “We’ve been in talks with James and his father, Jamie, for the last few months now; he is open to it, but we’re still working on it.”
Jamie Carragher himself also received Maltese citizenship.
While he proudly played for England, his son will now wear the colors of Malta on the international stage.
James is expected to make his debut on March 21, when Malta faces Finland in a 2026 World Cup qualifier.
A few days later, they take on Poland on March 24.
This is a huge moment for the young defender as he begins his international career.
