Jarell Quansah has received his first call-up under new England manager Thomas Tuchel for the upcoming World Cup qualification matches, marking a remarkable turnaround from a challenging start to his 2024-25 campaign.
The 22-year-old center-back was included in Tuchel’s 26-player selection announced today, alongside club teammate Curtis Jones, as England prepare to host Albania on March 21 and Latvia on March 24 at Wembley Stadium.
Quansah’s journey this season has been one of resilience and character development, particularly following a difficult beginning under new Liverpool manager Arne Slot.
The young defender started Liverpool’s Premier League opener against Ipswich Town but was withdrawn at halftime in what appeared to be a significant blow to his confidence.
The aftermath of this substitution proved challenging for Quansah, who found himself limited to just two Premier League starts this season.
His subsequent appearances in the Carabao Cup against West Ham and Brighton & Hove Albion also invited criticism, leading many to question whether he was regressing after a promising debut campaign in 2023-24 when he started 27 matches across all competitions
Quansah’s fortunes have improved significantly in recent weeks, culminating in an impressive cameo against Paris Saint-Germain in Tuesday’s Champions League match.
Introduced in the 73rd minute for the injured Trent Alexander-Arnold, Quansah performed admirably in an unfamiliar right-back role.
He previously joined the Three Lions’ senior squad in November 2024, when then-interim manager Lee Carsley drafted, as well as the preliminary Euro 2024 squad in the summer.
And now speaking to liverpoolfc.com, the 22-year-old has revealed that this call-up is the first one where he’s truly felt part of the squad”
“Yeah, it’s a surreal feeling?
Obviously with the last camp, it was to step in and stuff like that,” he began.
“But this one is definitely the first one where I feel part of the squad, it’s a great feeling.”
“Have I spoken to the new manager.
It’s good to be part of the plans.”
Quansah also has extensive experience representing England across seven different age groups, accumulating 30 caps throughout the youth system.
In Friday morning’s press conference, Arne Slot was quick to heap praise on his defender for the call-up.
