Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite has revealed what he thinks about his side potentially complicating Liverpool’s Premier League title chances ahead of the Merseyside Derby meeting on Wednesday.
Liverpool visit Goodison Park in midweek for the rescheduled Premier League meeting between both sides.
The game was supposed to be held late last year but was called off at the last minute due to adverse weather conditions in the UK.
The match, scheduled for 19:30 GMT, marks the final derby to be played at the historic Goodison Park before Everton’s move to their new stadium.
Arne Slot’s men enter the derby on the back of a disappointing 1-0 FA Cup loss to Plymouth Argyle, where Slot heavily rotated his squad.
But they are flying in the Premier League, and they head into the game sitting six points ahead of the rest.
A win in this game will put Liverpool nine points clear and strengthen their position in the title race.
Meanwhile, although Everton has not pulled completely clear of the relegation zone, they come into this game with momentum on their side.
The Toffees have picked up three league wins in a row and will be desperate to secure a win that will strengthen their place in the table and potentially disrupt Liverpool’s match to their 20th league crown.
A similar thing happened last season when Everton secured a 2-0 win over Liverpool, which derailed the Reds’ title hopes under Jurgen Klopp.
Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite has revealed what his focus and that of the team is ahead of the Merseyside Derby.
What Jarrad Branthwaite said
Branthwaite revealed that he does not care about derailing Liverpool’s title hopes but is focused on giving fans a memorable evening in what will be their last derby game at Goodison Park before Everton moves to its new stadium.
“It is obviously a big game, but we are going there just looking to win and put on a performance, not only for the fans but for ourselves,” he said.
“You can see the sort of change we have had in the past three/four games, so hopefully, we just continue that.
“It is a massive game, and I think everyone knows how big the game is.
The last game when we played them last season, that atmosphere, we need to recreate that and need to get everyone on our side and have a bit of momentum going into it and see what happens.
“It is the Merseyside derby, it is another game that we are looking to win, that’s it?
If you build it up too much, then you can fall under the pressure, if you know what I mean, so I think for us as players, we are going into it with the belief that we can result like last season.
“If you go into it bigging it up, it is a Merseyside derby, all the pressure is on, and everyone is watching; then you probably won’t play your best, so like I say, it is another game, we need to go out and perform and see what we can do.”
