Speaking on That Peter Crouch Podcast, Spearing confirmed he is still officially registered as a player.

In his own words, “How it works is I’ve pretty much signed pro forms?

If there was a catastrophe or something really bad happened and they were looking for someone to get involved, I can physically probably play with the forms I’ve signed.”

It’s not just a feel-good story either.

Spearing has been training regularly and staying fit in case of an emergency.

When Crouch jokingly asked him if he could still feature for the first team, Spearing replied with a smile.

And while the situation would need to be extreme, the door is not fully closed.

Beyond the surprise possibility of a return, Spearing also spoke with pride about his current role: “It’s incredible; it’s class [his role as player-coach with the Academy].”

“It’s kind of gone full circle, especially joining the academy at seven, going all the way through then coming back in and trying to get the next ones to come through.”

He added, “It’s a huge buzz and I still get to play.”

“I train most days and the coaching bit is on the side at the minute.”

“I’m trying to keep the boots on until someone will literally take them off me.”
