Jayden Danns has joined Championship club Sunderland on loan for the remainder of the season, with Liverpool also confirming a new long-term contract for the young striker.

Danns completed his medical in the North East on transfer deadline day, having put pen to paper on a new deal with the Reds.

He will now spend the rest of the campaign at the Stadium of Light, where Arne Slot will hope he can gain more first-team experience after impressing over the past 12 months.

However, Danns will begin his stint at Sunderland by remaining at Kirkby to undergo the first stages of his recovery from a recent injury.

Kristjaan Speakman revealed the issue was highlighted during his medical and will require the forward to 'to take a period of rest'.

The 19-year-old has made four senior appearances for Liverpool this season, having struggled with injury during the first half of the campaign.

The knock he picked up last summer prevented him from heading out on loan earlier, with a move to Plymouth Argyle mooted.

Danns will now hope to show some of the talent he has displayed for the Reds already in Sunderland's push for promotion to the Premier League, although he will not be available to make his debut for the Black Cats on Saturday against Watford.

"This is my first loan move and a chance to prove myself, so I’m very appreciative of the opportunity and I’m grateful to the club for placing their faith in me," Danns told Sunderland's website as the move was confirmed.

I’ve done my research and the team is incredible, so this feels like the right step.

"I’m disappointed that I will be unable to do that straightaway, but I’m proud to have joined the club and I will work hard throughout this period to ensure I can return to action and play my part."

Slot named Danns when listing his first-team options last month and the academy graduate is very much seen in his plans going forward.

He joins a Sunderland side in the promotion race from the Championship.

Monday's win over Middlesbrough, which delayed the loan move being confirmed, saw Sunderland stay within three points of the top two, while it has established a 14-point gap to 7th place and looks to have all but guaranteed a play-off spot this term.
