Jeremie Frimpong said last year that it would be "great" to sign for Liverpool, as the Reds continue to be linked with a move for the Bayer Leverkusen wide man.
Liverpool could be in the market for a new right-sided defender this summer as Trent Alexander-Arnold looks set to leave for Real Madrid.
Alexander-Arnold's Liverpool contract is due to expire on June 30, from which point he will be free to depart for nothing.
One player who has been frequently linked with replacing the 26-year-old is former Manchester City man Frimpong, who has established himself as one of the best right wing-backs in the world in recent years.
The prospect of moving to Anfield was put to Frimpong last year and he responded: "A great club, with history.
This season, Frimpong has figured as a right-winger more often than a wing-back, so it's unclear whether he would still be a suitable replacement for Alexander-Arnold.
However, Sport Bild reported earlier this week that Liverpool head coach Arne Slot is in regular contact with fellow Dutchman Frimpong, who reportedly has a $44 million release clause in his contract at Leverkusen.
The report said that the Reds' pursuit of Frimpong will ultimately depend on what happens with Alexander-Arnold, Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah this summer.
Should all three players end up leaving on free transfers, the Reds would reportedly prioritize moves for a new center-back and a new striker.
Frimpong previously revealed that he nearly joined Liverpool as a youngster, but ultimately ended up joining Manchester City as the club was easier to get to from where he lived.
Frimpong was born in the Netherlands but has spent the majority of his life in Britain, moving there as a seven-year-old and joining the City academy when he was nine.
Frimpong never made a senior appearance for City before joining Celtic in 2019, where he stayed for one and a half seasons ahead of joining Leverkusen.
"I chose Liverpool first," Frimpong said
