Jordan Henderson will require Ajax to tear up his contract if he is to join AS Monaco before Monday's transfer deadline.
The former Liverpool midfielder, 34, only moved to Amsterdam last January after a brief stint in Saudi Arabia with Al-Ettifaq.
Monaco are keen on the idea of bringing him to France but such a move will require Ajax to make concessions.
As first outlined by The Telegraph, Monaco are unwilling to pay a fee for the former England star, which means Ajax would likely need to terminate his deal to enable a move.

It's noted that Henderson, who is keen on making the move to Monaco, is negotiating with Ajax to try and secure an early release.
But Monaco have already made it clear they will move on to other targets if they cannot sign Henderson on a free transfer.
While Ajax are open to letting Henderson go in the summer, they are currently in contention for the Dutch title!
Henderson only joined Ajax from Al-Ettifaq 12 months ago.
And if Ajax technical director Alex Kroes' words back in November are anything to go by, the club could dig their heels in and attempt to persuade Henderson to at least see the season out in Amsterdam.
