Former Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson finds himself at the center of a transfer saga that has left Ajax fans and management stunned.

The 34-year-old midfielder, who joined the Dutch giants just a year ago reportedly attempted to force a move to AS Monaco, only to have his efforts thwarted by the management of Ajax.

Ajax technical director Alex Kroes has taken a firm stance, rejecting Monaco’s advances for Henderson?

The Ligue 1 club had been in advanced talks with the player, with reports suggesting a deal until June 2026 was close to being agreed.

It is believed that Ajax see the 81-time England international as too important for their season, and do not want to lose such a big player half-way through the campaign.

Henderson’s attempt to leave Ajax comes barely a year after the Dutch club offered him a lifeline following his ill-fated move to Saudi Arabia.

After just six months with Al-Ettifaq, Henderson terminated his contract and joined Ajax in January 2024, admitting he had made a mistake in moving to the Saudi Pro League.

Unfortunately for the Liverpool icon, it is not a good look to now try and force his way out of a club that showed faith in him – quickly installing him as club captain and providing him with a platform to regain his place in the England national team.

On Thursday, alarming news broke from the reliable Dutch outlets that Henderson told Ajax won’t play for them again if they block his move to Monaco.

This dramatic turn of events has led to him being stripped of the captaincy, with the armband given to goalkeeper Remko Pasveer for Ajax’s recent Europa League match against Galatasaray.

However, it seems that the 34-year-old has now come to his senses to put an end to this quite shocking saga.

Jordan Henderson reverses transfer decision

De Telegraaf, who have been reporting on the entire situation, have today revealed that Henderson now shows regret in the manner in which he acted this week.

After the Ajax win in the Europa League last night, a ‘guilty’ Jordan Henderson spoke with technical director Kroes to promise him that he will remain in the Dutch captain for the rest of the season.

The former Liverpool captain said that he has ‘grown to love the club’ and affirmed his desire to ‘give everything’ to ensure that Ajax qualifies for the Champions League as the number one or two in the Eredivisie.

It will now be interesting to see of Ajax boss Francesco Farioli restores Henderson’s status as club captain of this situation this week.

Interestingly, Fabrizio Romano – who was the one to break the news of Monaco interest – has not yet reported that the deal is off.
