Jordan Pickford has revealed what Michael Oliver said to him in extra time.
Liverpool’s 2-2 draw with Everton in the Merseyside derby was overshadowed by chaotic scenes following the final whistle, with both teams facing potential disciplinary action.
The match itself was a thrilling encounter but it was the events after the game that have dominated the headlines.
Everton midfielder Abdoulaye Doucouré played a central role in the post-match altercation, which began when he became involved in a confrontation with Liverpool fans.
His actions were seen as a catalyst for the brawl that ensued, involving players and staff from both teams.
Doucouré was shown a second yellow card, resulting in his ejection from the game.
The situation escalated further when Liverpool manager Arne Slot and one of his assistants, Sipke Hulshoff, were given red cards by referee Michael Oliver.
The cards were issued after Slot and Hulshoff became involved in an altercation with Oliver, with Slot in particular giving a firm handshake to the referee.
In recent years, Premier League clubs have faced significant fines for similar conduct.
For example, in 2022, Manchester City was fined £260,000 by the FA for failing to control their players during a match against Liverpool.
Similarly, in 2020, Chelsea was fined £25,000 for their part in a melee involving both teams during a match against Tottenham Hotspur.
What did Jordan Pickford say about Michael Oliver?
Jarrad Branthwaite and Carlos Alcaraz clashed heads in the 93rd minute, prompting referee Michael Oliver to stop the game for treatment.
This incident led to additional stoppage time being added to the match, which ultimately allowed Everton to score a crucial equalizer in the 98th minute through James Tarkowski’s volley.
Despite some controversy over the exact amount of added time, the decision to allow the game to proceed for this final attack was deemed correct by officials
And now Pickford revealed that went the Everton pair went down, Oliver told him how long the game had left:
“When Jarrad and Alcaraz went down, I said to Michael the ref ‘how long is left’ and he went ’97 and a half’ … I think we scored on 97:26 so it wasn’t like we played overtime,” Pickford asserted in a post-match interview.
“Great credit to lads for digging in and pushing all the way at the end because they kept coming at us – but I think we gave as good as we got and deserved a point.”
He added on the game and result:
“It’s something the fans will remember for a long time because it’s a Merseyside derby and we know it would have hung over our heads and the fans heads if Liverpool had won 2-1.”
“It’s crucial for a league position, we got to take the positives from it and move forward?
We know we’ve got to go to Anfield in a few weeks so we have to stay grounded.”
