Former Liverpool man Jordan Ibe has made a return to football.
Ibe has been in and out of football since a spell with Derby County in 2021 – with spells at Turkish team Adanaspor and Vanarama National League side Ebbsfleet amongst the clubs he’s been at since.
Many Reds fans will remember the now 29-year-old as the man that would replace Raheem Sterling after he was sold to Manchester City for £49m in 2015.
Under Brendan Rodgers, Ibe showed some promise in the 2014/15 season, following a successful loan spell at Derby County.
When Raheem Sterling departed, many viewed Ibe as his natural successor, with Rodgers himself stating, “He’s got a better end product than Sterling at that age.”
Unfortunately for Ibe, things would not pan out at Liverpool like he would have expected after Brendan Rogers was sacked and Jurgen Klopp came in that season.
The German used him sparingly and it came as no surprise when Liverpool cashed in on Bournemouth’s offer of £15 million in July 2016.
The transfer fee reflected the high expectations surrounding the winger, who had made 58 appearances for Liverpool across all competitions.
However, his time at Bournemouth proved challenging.
Over four seasons, he made 92 appearances, scoring five goals.
He signed a deal with Derby County after his contract at the Vitality Stadium expired in 2020.
However, it unfortunately did not get any better for the former Liverpool man, who then departed from Derby County in 2021.
In a cruel twist of fate, Ibe would go on to break his leg in a training session a mere two weeks after leaving Derby – at which point he took time out of the game and took an 18-month break from football.
In January 2021, he also took to Instagram to reveal his struggles with mental health:
“I’ve found myself in a dark place due to suffering from depression, It’s no scheme for the media or to have my name in your mouths, I just find things hard, truly.”
And after another spell out of football, Ibe has now returned to the pitch with a new side.
Which club has Jordan Ibe joined?
As mentioned, the 29-year-old has been in and out of clubs since 2021.
But it has now been announced that Ibe has signed a deal with Hungerford Town – currently operating in the eighth tier of English football.
He makes the switch from Hayes and Reading FC.
Speaking to the club’s official website, Ibe said:
“It is an honour to Hungerford Town for taking me in and believing in my dream.”
“It is time to buckle down and show the ability that I still have.
A serious talent that we are all looking forward to seeing in a Hungerford shirt.”
Now, as he begins this new chapter with Hungerford Town, it’s encouraging to hear him still believing in himself after all he went through.
we wish him all the best in his new endeavour.
