Liverpool left it late as Darwin Nunez grabbed the headlines in their 2-0 win against Brentford in the Premier League.

The Uruguayan striker came off the pitch and scored a brace in stoppage time as he got his side over the line with a lethal cameo.

The Reds have now opened up a seven-point lead at the top of the Premier League standings and have finally returned to winning ways after successive draws.

Nunez was the star of the show with his late brace and judging by the reaction of the Liverpool players, they were just as thrilled for his teammate as he was for himself as he appeared to silence some of his critics.

Ahead of the game, Arne Slot played down claims that Nunez is devoid of confidence and backed the Liverpool striker to come good for the club.

And he vindicated his manager’s faith in him with two goals that could prove to be priceless in the Premier League title race.

Liverpool created a lot of chances against Brentford but failed to put any of them away as it looked like it could be another one of those nights.

Nunez, who returned to the bench for this one after serving his suspension against Nottingham Forest, came on during the second half in place of Diaz.

While his first goal was a tap-in from close range after a brilliant pass from Trent Alexander-Arnold, he thundered another one home from close range as he celebrated passionately in front of the traveling fans.

After the full-time whistle, the Liverpool players – led by Alisson Becker – lifted him off his feet as the striker finally got his crowning moment of a dry run in front of goal.

Nunez always wears his heart on his sleeve and is a likable character, but there’s no denying that his end product hasn’t been good enough since he joined the club in 2022.

There have been moments like the late brace against Newcastle United last season when it looked like he had finally arrived, but he has failed to build on them with consistent displays.

Nunez doubled his Premier League tally for the season with a late brace against Brentford and will look to use his performance as a springboard to make a few more important contributions at the business end of the season.
