Former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has name-checked three players he knew would succeed at the club after observing them when they were still youngsters at the club’s academy.

The German manager enjoyed nine successful years at Anfield, leading the club to their first Premier League title in over 30 years and their sixth UEFA Champions League title in that time.

Apart from the trophies, which included the FA Cup, World Club Cup, UEFA Super Cup and Carabao Cup, Klopp also left a lasting legacy in the club’s academy.

The former Liverpool boss was a lover of academy players, and during his time, he handed more than 40 Liverpool academy graduates their senior debut.

Nine of these players were sold for almost £100m despite making a combined 58 first-team appearances for the Reds.

The likes of Ryan Kent, Danny Ward, Sergi Canos, Ovie Ejaria, Ki-Jana Hoever, Rafael Camacho, Harry Wilson, Rhian Brewster and Neco Williams were all shipped off for considerable fees despite such relative inexperience, and so few have been properly successful since.

While Kent and co.

were sold, others like Trent Alexander-Arnold, Nat Phillips, Harvey Elliott, Kaide Gordon, Conor Bradley, Curtis Jones, Stefan Bajcetic, Jarell Quansah, James McConnell, and Trey Nyoni are still at the club and are considered part of the club’s future.

But among all these players, Klopp named the trio of Alexander-Arnold, Elliott, and Jones as the ones he knew would make it at a professional level while watching them as youngsters.

“I saw Curtis Jones for the first time when he was 14,” the former Liverpool manager said when discussing his time at the club and how he knew from day one some of the players would make it.

“I saw him from my office with his curly hair.

I knew if he doesn’t take the wrong diversion, it will be fine.

“Same with Harvey Elliott, you can see it?

Trent Alexander-Arnold, the first day”
