Arne Slot is not the first Liverpool manager to take issue with Michael Oliver, with his predecessor Jurgen Klopp also once confronting the referee at the full-time whistle.

A furious Klopp accosted Oliver after Liverpool were denied a last minute penalty against Manchester City in a Premier League match in March 2024.

After the game, Slot and his assistant Sipke Hulshoff were given their marching orders by Oliver after the Dutch duo remonstrated with the referee, while Liverpool's Curtis Jones and Everton's Abdoulaye Doucoure were also shown red cards.

Wild scenes after the full-time whistle ensued after Everton's late equaliser was called into question following an offside claim against Doucoure and an accusation of a foul from Beto on Ibrahima Konate in the build-up.

There were also questions raised over the additional time period of five minutes being extended by such a significant amount.

Curtis Jones was shown a red card by Michael Oliver

The sight of Oliver being challenged by a Reds' manager will certainly be nothing to new to the Anfield faithful following Klopp's angry reaction in the City game last season.

Oliver eventually waved play on after the Doku incident with VAR siding with his decision, believing it wasn't a clear and obvious error.

Maybe they can hide behind the phrase it is not clear and obvious."

While Liverpool's draw with Everton has earned them a seven point lead at the top of the Premier League, the questions over what could have been will linger and hang in the direction of Oliver.

The 80-year-old posted on X: "This was an incorrect award of a free-kick that went on to result in Everton scoring their opening goal."

Jones and Doucoure will now both serve one-match bans for their dismissals unless the Premier League sees fit to extend those suspensions after reviewing the footage.
