Liverpool may be storming toward a title, but behind the scenes, a silent contract standoff with Ibrahima Konate is casting shadows over the club’s defensive future.
Liverpool and Konate remain locked in a contract stalemate, with no progress reported on an extension as speculation over a summer exit continues to mount.
The 25-year-old centre-back has quietly enjoyed his most consistent season yet, starting 26 Premier League games for the Reds.
Yet while attention has centred on contract renewals for Trent Alexander-Arnold, Virgil van Dijk, and Mohamed Salah, Konate’s future has flown under the radar.

According to Daily Mail journalist Lewis Steele, there has been “zero progress” in talks between Liverpool and Konate over a new deal.
The France international is out of contract in 2026, and with Paris Saint-Germain already linked, concern is growing that Liverpool could face another high-profile negotiation saga, just as they did with Salah, Van Dijk, and Trent.
Steele also noted that Joe Gomez and Jarell Quansah have external suitors, potentially pointing toward major changes in Liverpool’s backline under Arne Slot this summer.
Konate is seen by many fans as a future leader in defence, particularly as Van Dijk enters the latter stages of his career.
His improved availability this season has been a huge positive, with previous injury concerns beginning to ease.
However, Liverpool and Konate appear no closer to securing a new deal, leaving the door open for clubs like PSG to swoop in.
Encouragingly, recent renewal delays for Van Dijk and Salah were eventually resolved—each signing their new deals in quick succession.
As Van Dijk put it, “For me, there was only one club.
That was Liverpool.”
Fans will be hoping Konate feels the same.
