Lee Carsley has explained that Trent Alexander-Arnold will be playing a "different" role at left-back after moving the Liverpool star out of position for England's game with Finland.
The Three Lions interim boss has come under fire for his latest experiment involving the 26-year-old, who played the full 90 minutes of Thursday's 2-1 defeat to Greece in his usual right-back position.
However, with Manchester City's Kyle Walker coming into the starting XI, Carsley has opted to switch Alexander-Arnold to the opposite side of defence in a career-first for the Liverpool academy graduate.
Explaining his decision to ITV ahead of Sunday's clash in Helsinki, Carsley said: "He's a multi-versatile defender but his role will be a little different to a conventional left-back.
I've got a lot of confidence in Trent."
Alexander-Arnold will play in a back four alongside Walker, John Stones and Marc Guehi as England looks to return to winning ways.
Angel Gomes, Declan Rice and Jude Bellingham make up the midfield, with Cole Palmer, Jack Grealish playing on either side of Harry Kane in attack.
