Liverpool are Premier League champions after blowing away Tottenham Hotspur at Anfield on Sunday.

The Reds knew they needed only a draw to get over the line in front of their supporters and duly delivered a 5-1 thrashing.

It was a terrific display from Liverpool and highlighted their status as the best team in the Premier League by a mile this season.

As the Liverpool squad celebrated in front of the Kop at the final whistle, 35 years of emotion and frustration were swept away and forgotten.

One player who has certainly had reason to feel frustrated of late has been Darwin Nunez, who looks set to leave the Reds after a tumultuous three-year spell.

Nunez caused controversy on Saturday after sending an ill-judged social media post seemingly aimed towards head coach Arne Slot.

But after being confirmed as a Premier League champion on Sunday, Nunez sent an altogether different message out.

Nunez has had a poor season for Liverpool.

Having scored just seven goal all year long, he has no reason to be frustrated about a perceived lack of game time.

Nevertheless, the Uruguayan has also played his part in what has been an historic campaign for the Reds.

Nunez’s late double away at Brentford in January was the night many supporters truly believed Liverpool could win the league.

As a result, he deserves his Premier League winner’s medal and as per his post from the Liverpool dressing room on Sunday, Nunez seems to think so too.

“Premier League champion, let them tell it however they want,” the 25-year-old posted on X, cigar and bottle of Carlsberg in hand.

It is likely to be the end of the road for Nunez and Liverpool, but that’s the way to go out.

After his controversial post this weekend, it had felt unlikely that Nunez would get on the pitch against Tottenham.

However, when Arne Slot did eventually turn to the striker with just seven minutes left to play, he went on to prove exactly why Liverpool feel they need an upgrade this summer.

Nunez could easily have got himself the goal which topped off Liverpool’s title win.

Having been sent clean through on goal by Diogo Jota, all he had to do was finish it.

But instead, Nunez got inside his own head an sent a poor pass too far ahead of Mohamed Salah.

Confidence is low with Nunez, but he really should have just buried the chance and had his moment in front of the Kop.

And that there was why Liverpool want to sell the No.9 in a microcosm.
