The figures of Liverpool and all the other 19 Premier League clubs’ 2024/25 transfer spend has been published this week by football finance expert Kieran Maguire.

Much has been said of Fenway Sports Group (FSG) and their stewardship of Liverpool in the past few years, with the quiet transfer windows since the summer of 2023 only fueling the negative sections of the fanbase.

It’s sometimes easy to forget the positives that the Boston-ownership has implemented in their time at the club.

The completion of the AXA Training Centre, coupled with the ambitious £80m Anfield Road End expansion, demonstrates FSG’s commitment to strengthening Liverpool’s long-term foundations.

These developments have increased Anfield’s capacity to 61,000 and provided state-of-the-art training facilities that rival Europe’s elite.

But on the transfer front, there is unrest bubbling amongst the fanbase.

Deloitte recently revealed how much revenue top clubs around Europe generated, with the Reds ranking in eighth place and netting approximately £594m (€714.7m) in income during 2023/24.

But some new figures on Liverpool’s transfer spend means that legitimate questions could be posed at FSG and whether they are doing as much as they can to invest in the squad.

How much is Liverpool transfer spend compared to Premier League rivals

As we can see, Liverpool are stone last in transfer spend for the season, taking into account the 2024 summer transfer window and this past January window.

Liverpool’s £34.7m outlay represents the lowest spending among their competitors, falling significantly behind Brighton (£231.4m), Manchester United (£202.1m), and Manchester City (£200.8m).

Even clubs with well-documented financial constraints, such as Everton (£41.3m) and Newcastle (£56.2m), have invested more heavily in their squads.

This conservative approach to transfer spending becomes particularly striking when contextualized against the club’s healthy financial position and Champions League revenue.

With Premier League broadcasting revenues at record levels and commercial income continuing to grow, the disparity between Liverpool’s financial capability and actual transfer investment demands scrutiny.

The spend over 10 seasons shows that Liverpool are not scared to spend money when needed however:

Jamie Carragher has already suggested that ‘valid questions’ can be asked if Liverpool are pipped to the title without any January signings.

However, the latest figures will condemn FSG to villain status on Merseyside should Arne Slot’s men fail to win the Premier League title this season.
