Liverpool FC Women have parted ways with manager Matt Beard following a disappointing run of form that left the team seventh in the Women’s Super League (WSL), nine points clear of relegation but 15 adrift of European qualification.
Beard’s second tenure, which began in May 2021, initially revitalized the Reds, securing promotion to the WSL in 2022 and a fourth-place finish last season.
However, the 2024-25 campaign saw a stark decline, with just five wins in 18 league matches.
His critique of officials after a controversial Merseyside derby defeat in January 2025 reportedly irked club executives.
An excerpt from a club statement read:
“On behalf of the LFC Women board, Mike Gordon, Fenway Sports Group president, Billy Hogan, LFC chief executive officer, and communications director Susan Black, LFC thanks Matt for his significant contribution.”
“We have all experienced some fantastic moments with Matt as manager of LFC Women and we express our gratitude for his significant contribution.
Our priority was to return this team to where it belongs and we collectively achieved that in 2022 by winning promotion to the WSL.
“We need to build on that momentum and although this has been a difficult decision, we believe it provides us with the best opportunity for future success on the pitch.”
Amber Whiteley, 35, assumes interim charge as the club look for a permanet manager.
She joined Liverpool in 2020 as U21s head coach and technical director before stepping up as assistant manager under Beard in 2021.
This marks her second interim stint; she previously guided the team for six months in 2021 following Vicky Jepson’s departure?
The 35-year-old is a UEFA A-licensed coach with a Master’s in International Sport Management.
