Injuries during international breaks are always tough to take.
Clubs often dread those weeks, not just because they lose key players temporarily, but because one wrong step can change a season.
It’s especially frustrating when the player affected is just finding their rhythm.
For young talents, it’s even more heartbreaking.
A good run in the team can quickly turn into a long spell on the sidelines.
That’s exactly the situation for one Liverpool FC Women’s midfielder who had been enjoying a breakthrough season.
She had just started to get more minutes with the first team.
She scored her first senior goal in a cup match.
And she looked set to play a bigger role in the closing part of the campaign.
But now, that progress is on pause.
Zara Shaw has suffered an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury while on international duty with England U19s.
She picked up the injury during a European Championship qualifying match.
A scan confirmed the damage, and she will now begin a period of rehabilitation, as confirmed on the club’s official site.
Shaw is set to meet a specialist who will help decide the next steps for her treatment.
Shaw had previously come back from a similar injury, and her rise this season had been impressive.
She made eight appearances and scored a spectacular goal against Newcastle United in the League Cup.
Liverpool fans were starting to see her potential in midfield.
Interim head coach Amber Whiteley said, “It’s difficult to find the words to express how much disappointment everyone feels for Zara at the moment.”
She added, “Zara has a maturity beyond her years and she is a well-loved and respected member of our team.”
“She is one of our own.”
Whiteley also praised the support system around her.
“We are fortunate to have a brilliant medical team and a special group of players who will no doubt give Zara the best support possible.”
“We will all be with her every step of the way.”
It’s a blow for the team and the player.
But Zara has already shown resilience.
And Liverpool FCW will be right behind her again.
