Liverpool and Everton are set to come face-to-face at Goodison Park on Wednesday night for the first Merseyside Derby of the season.
This clash has been in waiting for over two months, following December’s postponement.
This season, it is not just any old derby game between the sides, the stakes are at an all-time high for the first time in a while.
For Everton, it is the final ever meeting with Liverpool at Goodison before moving to their new stadium on Bramley Moor, and as for the Reds, it is their game-in-hand over Arsenal, with potential victory racking up a crucial nine-point lead at the top of the Premier League.
Arne Slot will also have the opportunity to experience a Merseyside Derby for the first time in England.
In December, Sean Dyche would have been in charge for this fixture but following his sacking in January, the Toffees welcomed back old gaffer, David Moyes, reuniting after twelve years.
Moyes spent eleven years at Everton from 2002-2013, before leaving to succeed Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United.
On his return, the Blues have picked up three league wins on the bounce for the first time this season, after being threatened with relegation for the most-part.
Victories over Tottenham Hotspur, Brighton and Hove Albion and Leicester City have saw Everton force their way into a significant gap between themselves in 16th and the bottom three.
Ahead of the game, we will look into how Liverpool fared against David Moyes during his first spell as Everton boss, in comparison to their more recent permanent appointments.
SEAN DYCHE
Liverpool faced Sean Dyche four times whilst he was in the Toffees dugout, winning two and losing one.
In the first meeting in 2022/23, the Reds came out on top in a comfortable 2-0 victory, as Mohamed Salah and Cody Gakpo’s first goal saw off their rivals with ease.
Liverpool then repeated their victory by the same scoreline in the following season, but were put to the test against ten men for 53 minutes, following Ashley Young’s first-half dismissal.
Salah netted twice late on to seal a deserved three points in another Anfield derby.
FRANK LAMPARD
Frank Lampard hasn’t had the greatest of times when facing Liverpool as manager in the past, and that continued whilst in charge of their Merseyside rivals.
Liverpool were unbeaten against Lampard, winning one Anfield derby and drawing away at Goodison Park.
A 2-0 victory played out at home in 2021/22, with late second half goals from Andy Robertson and of course, Divock Origi, who else?
Origi just loved a goal against the Toffees.
The sides then played out a goalless draw at Goodison, in the reverse fixture, a familiar scoreline in recent derby matches, as they often cancel each other out.
RAFAEL BENITEZ
Former Liverpool UEFA Champions League winning manager, Rafa Benitez, bizarrely decided to swap the red half of Merseyside for blue in 2021.
Benitez was in charge of Liverpool for six years between 2004-2010, the first of three other Premier League clubs, including Everton.
The Spaniard only ever faced Liverpool once in charge of Everton, going on to lose 4-1 in a Goodison Park mauling.
A brace from Mohamed Salah, Jordan Henderson and Diogo Jota settled the score between the two rivals.
Following the victory.
Kopites teased their neighbours with comments of ‘Agent Rafa’, referencing his Liverpool connections and Everton supporters were never able to settle with a former Liverpool man in charge at Goodison Park.
Benitez faced the sack a few weeks later, enduring a dismal six months at the club, taking away a 100% losing record versus Liverpool.
CARLO ANCELOTTI
Carlo Ancelotti has often had Liverpool’s number over the years, also as Everton boss during his two seasons in charge from 2019/20 to 2020/21.
Ancelotti is one of only two managers to remain unbeaten against the Reds during his Everton tenure in the Premier League, drawing at Goodison twice and surprisingly taking three points away from a supporter-less Anfield.
The Goodison Park derby that season was sparked with controversy.
From Virgil van Dijk being clattered by Jordan Pickford without any punishment for the latter, to an injury-time Jordan Henderson winner being ruled out by the VAR for a ‘clear and obvious’ offside for Sadio Mane, that to this day, remains inconclusive.
Richarlison and Dominic Calvert-Lewin scored in a 2-0 win for the Toffees at Anfield, giving them their first away derby since 1999.
MARCO SILVA
Liverpool went up against Marco Silva at Everton a total of three times, remaining undefeated in two victories and another 0-0 stalemate Goodison Park draw.
In 2018, the Reds won it late due to some last minute Divock Origi heroics as Jordan Pickford couldn’t reach the crossbar, then, a 5-2 thumping at Anfield before Christmas in the following campaign was the last straw for Everton as they parted ways with Silva only a few days later.
Divock Origi, Xherdan Shaqiri, Sadio Mane and Gini Wijnaldum terrorised the Blues in one of the best derby victories for Liverpool of recent memory.
SAM ALLARDYCE
Liverpool failed to get the better of Sam Allardyce in either Merseyside derby meetings in 2018/19.
Mohamed Salah’s stunner that was worthy of the Puskas award that year, put the Reds ahead in the first-half at Anfield, but born-and-bred Evertonian, Wayne Rooney, dispatched a second-half penalty and the game ended all square.
Whereas at Goodison Park, another uninspiring 0-0 played out in the reverse fixture.
Sam Allardyce was unbeaten for Everton against a Jurgen Klopp Liverpool.
What a sentence that is.
RONALD KOEMAN
Ronald Koeman endured a tough spell as Everton manager against Liverpool.
The Dutchman lost both of his derby meetings during the 2016-17 season.
Sadio Mane’s last-gasp winner at Goodison Park ruined the Blues’ Christmas, as he latched onto Daniel Sturridge’s strike that struck the post and sent the away support into bedlem.
Philippe Coutinho was up to his usual tricks at Anfield, scoring beautifully as his sider were eventual 3-1 winners, courtesy of Sadio Mane and Divock Origi scoring either side of the Brazilian.
ROBERTO MARTINEZ
Spanish manager, Roberto Martinez, faced Liverpool six times during a two-year stay at Everton, only losing twice.
An entertaining 3-3 draw in 2014 was just one of four draws that Everton achieved under Martinez.
The sides played out two 1-1’s and a 0-0 during his time on Merseyside, achieving a better record than most.
DAVID MOYES
Liverpool’s Premier League record during David Moyes’ first spell at Everton feeds good reading, ahead of a huge game on Wednesday night.
In 25 league games, the Reds have won twelve, drawing nine and losing just four.
Goodison Park has not been a kind ground to Liverpool in recent years, winning just twice in their last seven visits across Stanley Park, and not to fall into the David Moyes trap again, following his four victories, all coming at home.
If Liverpool are to claim a first derby victory for Arne Slot, then they will have to expect a battle over the course of the ninety minutes, something they failed to deliver against Plymouth.
Away derbies are always hostile and they must block out the noise with full focus on the task at hand, which is claiming the all-important three points to extend their lead at the top of the table.
