Liverpool winger Luis Diaz reacts after his goal against Tottenham was, initially, ruled out for offside.(Image: Liverpool FC via Getty Images)
Liverpool have been told why the new VAR tool - semi-automated offside technology (SAOT) - took more than a minute to award Luis Diaz's equaliser against Tottenham Hotspur.
Despite it being a seemingly easy goal to allow, SAOT took one minute and 20 seconds to award it which suitably took the sting out of the celebrations - at least for a short period.
SAOT was introduced towards the end of this season, in the Premier League, to help speed up tight offside calls so that - naturally - left many questioning what the hold-up was.
On the latest episode of Ref Watch, former top-flight official Dermot Gallagher explained exactly why there was a delay.

"Dominik Szoboszlai isn't offside, so they had to check that," Gallagher relayed.
"Then Luis Diaz, they had to check that, as well.
"It took longer than anticipated, but it was the correct decision." Once that goal was given, Liverpool did not look back as they cruised to a 20th English top-flight title to draw level with arch rivals Manchester United.

Alexis Mac Allister's thunderbolt turned the match on its head - before Cody Gakpo's finish put the result beyond any doubt.
SAOT was then called into action, once again, for Liverpool's fifth as Destiny Udogie turned the ball into his own goal.
This time, the new technology worked seamlessly to spot that Salah was behind the ball and, therefore, not in an offside position.
