Liverpool Women were back in action on Merseyside and once again it was West Ham in opposition after Matt Beard’s side dismantled the Londoners in midweek 5-0 in the fourth round of the Women’s FA Cup.
Albeit helped by a first-half red card to Amber Tysiak, Beard’s side were far superior on the night and will be hoping to back up that performance with a strong showing back in the Women’s Super League.
As such, it was more or less full strength for the hosts at their now homely Totally Wicked Stadium with January arrival Sam Kerr in from the start and on-loan Chelsea midfielder Julian Bartel named amongst the substitutes along with the returning Sophie Roman Haug.

It was Liverpool who made the brighter start with Marie Hobinger, Lucy Parry and captain Taylor Hinds all seeing plenty of the ball, forcing the West Ham goalkeeper into early action and piling on pressure from corners.
A break in play following a Grace Fisk foul brought about a change in momentum as the visitors mustered their first meaningful attack on the 20-minute mark, a back post acrobatic volley just looping over onto the roof of the net.
Liverpool’s first effort came when Kerr found room on the edge of the box but could only fire over from range with a well-struck but ill-directed effort to break the deadlock.

The stalemate was broken in style when Leanne Kiernan deftly flicked on a low Ceri Holland cross to beat Kinga Szemik in the West Ham goal, the first moment of true quality in an attacking sense in the contest paying dividends.
Whilst it continued to be the hosts with the lion’s share of possession, chances were few and far between as an elongated first half came to an end with Kiernan’s sublime finish the only difference between the two sides on the scoresheet.
The second half began much in the same pattern as the first as Beard’s side continued to threaten from corners especially with Jenna Clark coming close with a header just moments into the half.
Despite the dominance, there was little in the way of golden opportunities for Liverpool and a crossbar-glancing Taylor Hinds effort from a tight angle aside, the home side never truly came close to doubling their advantage.
As such, West Ham rallied late on and corner kicks looked to be the best route to goal and were it not for the brilliance of Grace Fisk at the back it could well have been a different story as The Reds hung on for a hard-fought 1-0 victory.

Speaking after the match, the Liverpool Wonmen’s boss spoke of the recent home form: “It’s good.
It was always going to be a tough afternoon after playing them on Wednesday but ye I’m really pleased.
That header at the end is just as important as a goal.
It just goes to show what having a fully fit squad can do.”
On the squad post-transfer window: “We’re really pleased, we still have players missing.
I’m really pleased with the squad, we’re a young squad we know that but I’m really excited to see how far we can grow together.”
