Jan Molby believes that Liverpool already have the ideal replacement for Mohamed Salah in the shape of Cody Gakpo.

The Danish former midfielder – who played for the Reds between 1984 and 1996 – says that the wide attacker has "shown what he can produce" after arriving at Anfield from PSV in 2023, with eight goals and three assists to his name in the current campaign.

With Salah's contract still set to expire in a matter of months, as a new deal has not yet been agreed, Molby has hinted that Gakpo could fill the shoes of the Egyptian should he part ways with his club of eight years.

Speaking to AceOdds, Molby said: "When Liverpool signed Cody Gakpo I thought he was a wide attacker and Liverpool at the time had other ideas.

"Maybe they were looking for a Bobby Firmino replacement.

He’s from the city of Liverpool so it’d be one hell of a deal."

Salah would undoubtedly be a big miss at Anfield should he part ways with Liverpool, given that he has been one of the club's most consistent players over the course of his tenure.

The 32-year-old forward has scored 25 goals and provided 16 assists for the Reds in 27 Premier League outings across 2024/25 thus far, and has been imperative to their success.

At present, Liverpool currently sit first in the Premier League, 11 points clear of second-place Arsenal with 11 games left to play.

However, a major rebuild could be needed over the summer due to Salah, as well as Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold all being out of contract and yet to sign new deals.

Van Dijk recently announced that he is fully committed to the club, and that personal conversations have been going on for a while now despite a new deal coming to fruition, while Alexander-Arnold has been linked with Real Madrid for quite some time now – albeit his final decision has not yet been revealed.

Meanwhile, Salah has recently explained that he is more focused on winning the Premier League than a new contract, telling Premier League Productions ahead of Sunday's 2-0 win over Manchester City: "I just feel like my whole focus now is to win the Premier League.

It doesn’t matter if it’s the last game [against City] or not the last game, we will see."

Liverpool turn their attention to Newcastle United in the Premier League on Wednesday evening, before visiting the French capital to play PSG in their round of 16 first leg in the Champions League next Wednesday.
