Liverpool and Arsenal could be involved in a transfer tug-of-war this summer as the Reds plan a significant reshaping of their attacking options ahead of Arne Slot’s second season at Anfield.
Darwin Nunez and his time at Liverpool appears to be drawing to a close after a disappointing third season that has seen him score just six goals in 35 appearances.
Fabrizio Romano has consistently maintained that he expects the No.9 to depart Anfield in the summer.
The Uruguayan isn’t the only potential departure, with question marks also hanging over the futures of Luis Diaz and Diogo Jota.
With potentially multiple attacking departures looming, it seems Newcastle’s Alexander Isak tops the wishlist – although it looks like wishful thinking due to his likely British-record transfer fee of well over £100m.
But it according to David Ornstein, Liverpool could yet look to Nico Williams in the forward ranks – but will face competition from Arsenal as well as a host of other European giants.
Writing in his weekly Q&A session for the Athletic, the transfer journalist suggested that Liverpool still have their name in the hat:
Arsenal’s pursuit of Nico Williams is well documented… it seems like they will try again and I doubt they will be alone; the likes of Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Chelsea and Liverpool are among the many clubs to have considered and/or pursued him,” the reporter wrote.
What makes Williams such an attractive proposition is his release clause, which stands at €58 million (approximately £48.75 million).
At 22, the winger represents excellent value in today’s inflated market, especially considering his performances for Spain at Euro 2024, where he scored in the final against England.
This season, Williams has recorded nine goals and seven assists in 38 appearances across all competitions for Athletic Bilbao.
His explosive pace, direct dribbling ability, and increasing end product make him an ideal fit for the Premier League.
But it’s that Arsenal have reportedly taken the first steps in their pursuit of Athletic Bilbao winger Nico Williams.
According to Foot Mercato this week, newly appointed sporting director Andrea Berta recently held face-to-face discussions with the player’s representatives to explore the possibility of a summer transfer to North London.
These preliminary talks were aimed at assessing Williams’ interest in joining Arsenal ahead of the upcoming transfer window.
Despite fierce competition, Liverpool could have several advantages in the pursuit of Williams
The club’s dominant position in this season’s Premier League – currently 12 points clear of second-placed Arsenal – strengthens their appeal, as does their storied European history?
Under Arne Slot, Liverpool have demonstrated a clear attacking philosophy that could showcase Williams’ talents.
