It has been a case of so far, so good for Liverpool under Arne Slot.

Heading into the September international break after enjoying an 100% winning start to the season, their new head coach has been nominated for the Premier League manager of the month award as a result.

The Reds are yet to even concede a goal, while a number of Slot’s inherited squad are really catching the eye.

The likes of Ryan Gravenberch and Ibrahima Konate are much improved, while Mohamed Salah and Luis Diaz have been in blistering form on the flanks with only Erling Haaland outscoring them in the English top-flight.

However, it’s not all plain sailing for Liverpool, as speculation regarding the futures of Salah, Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold continue.

Meanwhile, despite the Reds’ strong start to the season, rounded off most recently by a 3-0 dismantling of bitter-rivals Manchester United at Old Trafford, there is still ongoing debate in the club’s fanbase regarding Liverpool’s summer transfer business.

Federico Chiesa was the only addition to Slot’s inherited squad, arriving in a bargain £12.5m deal from Juventus at the end of August, while the Reds have also agreed a £29m deal with Valencia to sign goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili, with the Georgian moving to Anfield next summer.

Depending on whether your glass is half-full or half-empty will decide how you perceive such dealings, given the fact that Liverpool opted against moving for a new number six after being rejected by Real Sociedad’s Martin Zubimendi.

Despite initial interest in Leny Yoro, the Reds also decided against strengthening at centre-back.

On one hand, they still boast four senior options, but on the other, supporters are still haunted by the defensive injury crisis that robbed Liverpool of all their senior options in 2020/21.

Slot regularly spoke of the strength of his inherited squad during the transfer window as he defended the Reds’ lack of incoming business, and his faith has been rewarded given the club’s start to the campaign.

Continue to perform on the pitch and any doubts about the club’s summer business will be silenced.

Yet positive performances on the pitch will in turn create a greater scrutiny regarding Salah, Van Dijk and Alexander-Arnold’s contracts the longer their futures remain unresolved.

It’s a thin line between success and failure as Liverpool wait to be judged on such decisions that will ultimately be dictated by results and injuries.
