The three Liverpool contracts of Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk, and Trent Alexander-Arnold will likely continue to dominate the headlines until a resolution is found, one way or another.
It has already been reported that the club’s management is actively engaged in negotiations to secure extensions for these pivotal figures.
The trio have showcased this season that they are still more than capable of playing for Liverpool, and it’s almost starting to look like both parties need each other.
Van Dijk and Salah will have likely cast an eye on how the careers of Sadio Mane, Bobby Firmino, and more have gone since leaving at the end of their Liverpool contracts.
The pair are 33 and 32 respectively and will a year older by the time their contracts come to an end next summer.
Despite his age, Salah continues to perform at a high level, drawing comparisons to the longevity of players like Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.
Salah’s recent cryptic social media post, stating, “No matter what happens, I will never forget what scoring at Anfield feels like,” has fueled speculation about his future at the club.
But it seems Carragher follows a similar line of thinking regarding the two older players.
What did Jamie Carragher say about Liverpool contracts?
Despite all the speculation, the former Liverpool man has asserted that he expects both the Dutchman and the Egyptian to extend their deals, but that he does not hold the same belief for the younger Trent Alexander-Arnold:
“I’m pretty confident that the two older lads will sign, because I think they’re probably at the stage of their career now where it’s difficult to move to a club better than Liverpool for those two,” Carragher said to BBC 5 Live (h/t Empire of the Kop).
“For me, the only two clubs where sometimes, if I was in the dressing room when I was a player that people would move on to, would be the Spanish giants.”
“I don’t really see that at the ages now for Virgil and Mo, and I think Mo Salah will be desperate to break as many records as he possibly can at Liverpool.”
“I think the argument – we’ve all been there, haven’t we – where you’re looking for that last contract and it’s not really about money, it’s about maybe length of contract for those lads as they get a little bit older.”
“Trent, he’s in a different situation, and that’s probably the one most people are now worried about, with the situation with Real Madrid obviously being interested, but also the fact that [Dani] Carvajal has just done his ACL, so they are obviously desperate for a right back as well for the next probably 18 months.”
At 26, Alexander-Arnold is a product of Liverpool’s academy and has established himself as one of the premier right-backs in football.
In the build-up towards the Arsenal draw, the vice-captain made it clear how much he enjoys representing Liverpool day-in and day-out.
For the club’s sake, let’s hope that Carragher’s doubts are misplaced.
