Liverpool are continuing to be linked with a move for Bayer Leverkusen star Jeremie Frimpong.

The Reds have been tentatively linked with signing the Netherlands international in recent months, who played a key role in helping Leverkusen win the Bundesliga last season.

Frimpong is reported to have a €40million (£33.5million) release clause in his contract at Leverkusen, which has only fuelled speculation that he could leave the German club in the summer.



Liverpool have been mentioned as potentially showing an interest in signing the 24-year-old in the summer, and now a fresh update has emerged on the defender's future.

Spanish news outlet Defensa Central have claimed that Frimpong is "close" to signing for Liverpool when the transfer window opens.

This comes days after a report from Sport Bild in Germany, which claimed that the Reds have a genuine interest in signing Frimpong this summer.

Frimpong plays at right-back for Leverkusen, and if Liverpool's interest turns out to be genuine it could be with a view to potentially replacing Trent Alexander-Arnold.

The Reds vice-captain is out of contract this summer and it remains to be seen if he will extend his stay at Anfield.

It was earlier this year that Frimpong revealed that he was close to signing for Liverpool at the start of his career.

“There were scouts there like Liverpool, Bolton, Man City and a lot more.

“But I chose Liverpool first.
