A swift and hefty cash injection could be about to breathe life into Liverpool’s January plans, with chief executive of football Michael Edwards given the freedom to spend.
The Reds have so far kept their cards close to their chest, but Darwin Nunez’s potential exit may open the door to as many as three additions for Arne Slot.
The misfiring forward has already been the subject of a £70million bid from Saudi Arabian giants Al-Hilal, according to reports.
However, Liverpool are said to have turned down that offer in the hope of recuperating as much as £85m, though they are willing to come to the table if another £5m is added to the Middle Eastern proposal.
And with that money, Edwards could repeat some of the success from his initial spell at Anfield.
One eye would surely be on a potential replacement for Mohamed Salah, given the Egyptian superstar has less than six months on his current contract.
If he does leave for free, then Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo would surely be very high on the agenda.
The Cameroon forward himself has just 18 months left on his deal in west London and has been playing at a very high level in the Premier League since Brentford’s promotion in 2021.
He already has 13 league goals this season, only Salah and Erling Haaland have scored more, and would be able to fill in as a central striker when needed to help fill the void left by Nunez.
Thomas Frank would like to hold onto his talisman, but £50m or even less could be enough to prise him away from the London side.
Defensive reinforcements have also been stressed, with Jamie Carragher among many to call for another left-back addition to ease the burden on Andy Robertson.
Bournemouth’s Milos Kerkez is routinely linked with a move to Merseyside and although Andoni Iraola would be wary of letting one of his key players leave, a large bid may prompt a rethink if funds from Nunez’s sale are reinvested into a problem area.
Easing the blow could be Julio Soler, the left-back Bournemouth signed from Paraguayan side Lanus for an initial £6.6m.
He made his debut against West Brom in the FA Cup and Iraola said that he “liked his game” after playing the full 90 minutes.
With Nunez leaving a gap by leaving for Saudi, Liverpool appear to have opted against replacing him with a youngster such as Jayden Danns by moving for Nurnberg striker Stefanos Tzimas.
The Reds are reportedly already in talks over a £21m move for the 19-year-old, and could sweeten the deal by allowing the Greek star to stay in Germany for the remainder of the season.
