The now-injury hit former Southampton playmaker is currently the most expensive footballer under the age of 20 in the game’s history.
So, while Liverpool have spent heavily over the last decade or so on more established talent, it may still come as a surprise to learn that the biggest amount of money they have ever spent on a teenage footballer was the £10 million fee forked over to Lille for a 19-year-old Divock Origi over a decade ago.
Though as Liverpool sent scouts to South America to watch Argentina’s brightest talent, the Premier League leaders could soon be making their belated entrance into that aforementioned 15-strong list.

Football correspondent Graeme Bailey exclusively told RTK that Liverpool are watching River Plate duo Augustin Ruberto and Ian Subiabre.
Another Millonarios wonderkid in Franco Mastantuono has been linked with a move to Anfield since then too.

Now, River Plate’s response to the growing throng of clubs pursuing wing wizard Mastantuono provides a clue as to how they will approach Liverpool’s interest in 18-year-old Subiabre.
Mastantuono’s release clause was increased from £26 million to nearer £40 million.
And, according to reporter Jonathan Riniti, Subiabre is set to receive the same treatment.
“River are looking to increase Subiabre’s release clause to 40 million dollars, as they did with Franco Mastantuono,” Riniti tells El Crack Deportivo.
[But] he is one coach Marcelo Gallardo could lose.”
If Liverpool were to trigger a potential £30 million release clause, then, Ian Subiabre would become not only their biggest ever teenage acquisition, he would also join Lavia, Yoro, Rooney and co amongst the Premier League’s top ten, let alone the top fifteen.
The question is, of course, whether Subiabre is worthy of such an investment.
“There are these two boys from River Plate, Ian Subiabre and Augustin Ruberto,” Bailey explains.
“Man City assessed them both when they signed Claudio Echeverri and Liverpool are looking closely at the pair of them, they’re very good as you can imagine.
“There’s some tremendous talent in that [Argentina Under-20] team.”
Despite only celebrating his 18th birthday in January, Subiabre has already made 12 first-team appearances for River Plate.
– Subiabre is renowned for his dazzling dribbling ability, his mesmerising close control and his ability to create something out of very little.
Subiabre, who’s agent is the former Rangers hero Claudio Caniggia, can also be utilised wide on the left, where he likes to drift infield and make darting runs towards the penalty area.
“The young winger stands out for his speed, one-on-one ability, and ability to create unbalances in the final third of the pitch,” reads a profile provided by LV7 Radio Tucuman.
