Liverpool have been named among a few top clubs reportedly interested in signing one of Ecuador’s most highly-rated players.
Liverpool are seemingly well covered in the central defensive unit, with Van Dijk, Ibrahima Konate, Joe Gomez, and Jarell Quansah four senior centreback options currently available at the club.
Quansah recently signed a new long-term deal that will see him continue his development at the club, while Liverpool are reported to be close to reaching a contract agreement with Konate.
However, there is still some measure of uncertainty regarding the futures of Joe Gomez and Van Dijk.
Gomez was close to leaving Anfield in the last transfer window, with Newcastle United showing strong interest in him.
The 27-year-old is Liverpool’s current longest-serving player, but he is behind Van Dijk and Konate in the pecking order.
So, a move to a club where he will command a starting berth every week has not been ruled out for the Englishman.
Meanwhile, Van Dijk has yet to agree on a new deal with Liverpool.
Even if the 33-year-old signs a new deal, he is approaching the twilight of his career, and Liverpool will have to begin planning for life after him.
As such, the Reds are actively in the market for a new defender who fits the club’s profile, and a recent report states they have set their eyes on one young defender.
Liverpool want Joel Ordonez
According to CaughtOffside, Liverpool are among a host of Premier League clubs interested in a potential transfer swoop for highly-rated young Club Brugge defender Joel Ordonez.
Per the report, the Ecuador international is one of the names on Liverpool’s list of defensive targets?
CaughtOffside also claims that Liverpool are not the only club keen on Ordonez, with Newcastle and Villa also in the race for the signature.
“Ordonez would likely cost around €30 million to prise away from Brugge, who will no doubt be keen to keep this important player, whilst also likely recognising that it’s going to become harder and harder for them to stop him moving to a more competitive league sooner or later,” the report noted.
The 20-year-old has impressed with his performances during his time in Belgium, including with some appearances for the club in the Champions League.
