It has been a chastening week for Liverpool Women after Arsenal exacted revenge for their recent FA Cup exit to the Reds during their latest Women's Super League clash.

Amber Whiteley's side were thumped 4-0 at the Emirates last weekend as a run of three successive victories was brought to a shuddering halt.

Liverpool, though, have won six of their last eight games as they continue to build up to their FA Women's Cup semi-final against Chelsea next month.

The Reds now entertain Aston Villa on Sunday hoping to bounce back from last weekend's setback.

Matthews backed

If last Saturday's loss at Arsenal was tough going, it was particularly hard on Liverpool defender Jasmine Matthews who was credited with scoring an own goal in each half to take the game away from the visitors.

"I felt for Jas because she has been brilliant for us in recent weeks," said Reds interim boss Whiteley.

"She has great character and I have no doubt she will take the learnings from the game and move forward quickly.

"While we don't like losing games, we have to acknowledge that Arsenal played very well on the day.

Credit to them because they were at their best on Saturday and they didn't give us a minute, with or without the ball, so it was a difficult one for us.

"I've watched the game back and I actually thought we defended quite well for large parts of the game.

But if you switch off in moments against Arsenal when they are in that sort of mood, you are punished for it and that's what happened."

St Helens calling

Last month's international break, a run of away games and Anfield hosting the victory over Manchester United has meant Liverpool haven't played at St Helens since the 1-0 triumph over West Ham United on February 2.

The Reds, though, are back at their new home on Sunday with the visit of Aston Villa, who have won just two league games all season and none since before Christmas.

"It feels like a lifetime since we've been at St Helens, so I'm really looking forward to going back there in front of our home fans," said Whiteley.

"It makes such a huge difference when we have the fans out in numbers and in good voice, getting behind us, and it just gives us that extra push we need to get the results we want over the line."

Kapocs given call

Cornelia Kapocs is celebrating after being called up to the Sweden national team for the first time.

The forward, who joined Liverpool last summer, is part of Peter Gerhardsson's squad for the forthcoming UEFA Nations League matches against Italy and Wales.

Coaching change

There was confirmation of a further change behind the scenes ahead of the Arsenal game last weekend when Niamh Russell was appointed assistant coach to Whiteley on an interim basis.

Russell was previously assistant coach with LFC Women's Pro Game Academy and will continue to play a role with the under-21 side.
