Liverpool's dramatic 2-1 win over West Ham United played its part in a record-breaking day for Sky Sports as their viewership reached 7.5million on Sunday.

The Reds took a giant stride towards winning their second Premier League crown thanks to Virgil van Dijk's header in the dying embers.

The sports broadcast provider showcased a wide range of events across their respective channels, with the lion's share tuning in to see Rory McIlroy win his first Masters and complete the Grand Slam of golf's majors.

Figures suggest that there was a record peak audience of 1.85million viewers, 37 per cent of TV viewership, who tuned in to see the Northern Irish golfer pick up the famous green jacket as he overcame Justin Rose in a playoff.

Arne Slot's side looked set to see themselves move 13 points clear at the Premier League summit, but a defensive mix-up between Virgil van Dijk and Andy Robertson allowed for the Scotland international to inadvertently steer home into his own goal.

The Dutchman atoned for the mishap just three minutes later as he shrugged off his marker to head past Alphonse Areola and hand Liverpool the win.

Van Dijk fuelled further contract speculation as he kissed the Liverpool badge in front of the Kop end.

The whopping 7.5million viewers turned into Sky Sports linear channels, which featured Manchester United's latest drubbing - this time at the hands of Newcastle United in a 4-1 defeat.

Former Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard was spotted in Bahrain for the Formula One Grand Prix, televised on their F1 channel, in the Middle East.

As he enjoys his time away from management, he witnessed Australian Oscar Piastri finished ahead of a Great British two-three in George Russell and Lando Norris.

The dramatic and emotional triumph from Red Devils fan, McIlroy, captured the attention of sports fans across the country.

Sky Sports managing director Jonathan Licht said: "Sunday was a day of unforgettable sporting drama, and a proud day for Sky Sports, as the live action had fans gripped from the morning into the early hours.

"From Rory’s [McIlroy] historic win at Augusta to an exciting Bahrain Grand Prix and a packed schedule of football, cricket and tennis - it was a day that had it all.
