Liverpool's reward for finishing top of the revamped Champions League opening stage is a blockbusting round of 16 clash against Paris Saint-Germain as their path to the final emerged.

The Reds have been paired with the French champions and runaway leaders during the draw for the knockout stages of the competition in Nyon on Friday morning.

The first leg will take place in Paris on Tuesday March 4 or Wednesday March 5, with the return at Anfield the following midweek.

While Arne Slot's side won seven of their eight games to lead Barcelona in the standings of the league stage, PSG had to come from two goals down to beat Manchester City at home and then win at Stuttgart on the final matchday to ensure they made the top 24 and reached the play-off round.

The French side subsequently thrashed compatriots Brest 10-0 on aggregate - winning 3-0 away before a thumping 7-0 home triumph on Wednesday night - to reach the last 16.

Liverpool have twice before faced PSG in European competition.

They lost 3-2 on aggregate in the European Cup Winners' Cup semi-final in 1997, while in 2018/19 they won 3-2 at Anfield and were beaten 2-1 in France during the Champions League group stage on their way to winning the competition.

In the remainder of the draw, title rivals Arsenal take on PSV Eindhoven while fellow Premier League side Aston Villa are up against Bruges.

Having both also finished in the top eight of the league stage, their second leg is at home.

Elsewhere, Benfica take on Barcelona, Real Madrid face Atletico Madrid, Borussia Dortmund face Lille, Bayern Munich play Bayer Leverkusen and Feyenoord are up against Inter Milan.

Liverpool have been placed in the silver half of the draw, with their possible route to the final in Munich on May 31 having now emerged.

Should they beat PSG, they will then face the winners of Bruges v Aston Villa in the quarter-finals with the second leg away, while one of Real, Atletico, PSV or Arsenal await in the semi-finals where the second leg is at home.

It means all the Premier League clubs are on the same side of the draw.
